Tools and Resources

Expasy’s GlycoMod
GlycoMod is a tool that can predict the possible oligosaccharide structures that occur on proteins from their experimentally determined masses. The program can be used for free or derivatized oligosaccharides and for glycopeptides.
Expasy’s GlyConnect
GlyConnect is a platform integrating several sources of information to characterise the molecular actors of glycosylation, mainly glycoproteins and N- and O-linked glycans. The purpose of GlyConnect is to bring out in a single resource the relationships between glycans, the proteins that carry them, the enzymes that synthesise or degrade them and the proteins that bind them.

GlyCosmos
The GlyCosmos Portal is a Web portal aiming to integrate the glycosciences with the life sciences. It consists of Standards, Repositories and Data Resources, providing information about genes, proteins, lipids, pathways and diseases.

GlyTouCan
GlyTouCan is the international glycan structure repository. This repository is a freely available, uncurated registry for glycan structures that assigns globally unique accession numbers to any glycan independent of the level of information provided by the experimental method used to identify the structure(s). Any glycan structure, ranging in resolution from monosaccharide composition to fully defined structures can be registered as long as there are no inconsistencies in the structure.

GlycoPOST
GlycoPOST is a mass spectrometry data repository for glycomics. It consists of a high-speed file upload process, flexible file management system and easy-to-use interfaces. Users can release their “raw/processed” data via this site with a unique identifier number for the paper publication. Users also can suspend (or “embargo”) their data until their paper is published. The file transfer from users’ computer to our repository server is very fast and uses only web browsers – it does not require installing any additional software.

UniCarb-DR
UniCarb-DR was launched in 2019 in order to provide a forum for depositing annotated glycomic MS/MS spectra according to the MIRAGE reporting guidelines for glycomic experiments. UniCarb-DR is the non-curated sister repository to the curated UniCarb-DB database. UniCarb-DR allows data to be uploaded as part of scientific publications, fulfilling the requirement for data open access.

Essentials of Glycobiology, 4th edition
Glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis, biology, and evolution of saccharides (sugar chains or glycans) that are widely distributed in nature, in all life-forms. Glycobiology is a rapidly growing field in the natural sciences, with broad relevance to many areas of basic research, biomedicine, and biotechnology. The field includes the chemistry of carbohydrates, the enzymology of glycan formation and degradation, the recognition of glycans by specific proteins, roles of glycans in complex biological systems, and glycan analysis or manipulation by various techniques. The fourth edition of this primary textbook in the field continues in the prior tradition to provide a basic overview of Glycobiology, directed toward the advanced undergraduate or the beginning graduate-level student of molecular and cellular biology and biomedicine. This edition includes a broader focus on all lineages of life-forms; a wider range of topics, from biology and medicine to chemistry, bioenergy, and materials science; a more diverse and international group of contributing authors with expertise in specific areas; further expansion of the monosaccharide symbol nomenclature for representation of glycans; and a greater attention to informatics, with relevance to exploring the glycome in relation to the genome, transcriptome, proteome, lipidome, and metabolome.
This book is now freely available online.
